About

Company Overview

Sphinx Werkzeuge AG is a Swiss manufacturer of precision cutting tools for micromechanics and medical technology: applications where tolerances are measured in microns and quality is not a differentiator but a prerequisite. Founded in 1994, the company built its reputation on engineering excellence and relentless innovation, earning the trust of customers in some of the most demanding manufacturing environments in the world.

Customers from the automotive, aerospace, and medical technology sectors rely on Sphinx tools for operations where conventional tooling simply cannot deliver the required precision. Multiple certifications attest to the company's quality standards, but it is the consistent performance of the tools themselves that has made Sphinx a reference in its field. With approximately 115 employees operating from three Swiss production facilities, the company combines artisanal precision with industrial-scale capability.

Partnership

Our Partnership

Helvetica Capital acquired a majority stake in Sphinx Werkzeuge through a management buy-out in September 2016, structuring a succession solution that gave the company stable ownership and a platform for continued development. Over the following years, the partnership supported management in strengthening the company's market position and operational capabilities.

Transition

Transition

When Sandvik AB (one of the world's leading high-technology engineering groups, headquartered in Sweden) identified Sphinx as a strategic fit for its Sandvik Coromant division, it represented the ideal outcome. Sandvik understood precision manufacturing, valued engineering culture, and could provide a global platform for Sphinx's products. The acquisition was completed in 2022.

Critically, all employees were retained, all three Swiss production facilities were preserved, and management continued to lead the company under the new ownership. It was a transition that validated the original investment thesis: build from strength, and the right buyer will come.
